SEKOLAH Kebangsaan St John (1) became the first primary school in Kuala Lumpur to set up a Crime Prevention Club (KPJ). The club was launched by the Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) vice-chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.

“There are over 1,200 KPJs established in secondary schools throughout the country,” said Lee.
Lee said the club’s objective was to educate students to obey the law and create an awareness on the crimes being committed in the country.

“According to the police crime index there have been 113,520 criminal cases from January to June this year. There is an increase of 7,284 cases compared with last year in the same period,” he said.“Cases involving students increased with 1,034 cases from January to June this year compared with last year, which was only 888.

“These students aged between seven and 18 years were involved in violence (402) and property (632) cases.

“We have to give the right emphasis for crime-related issues with activities like education, touring of police station and prison as well talks by the police,” said Lee, who also launched the school’s Merdeka & Patriotism month.

Lee said MCPF would help to monitor the clubs’ active role.
Also present at the launch was MCPF chairman Datuk William Lim.
